I've been running in minimalist/barefoot shoes for about 3 years now. I started with the Nike Free and then moved on to the Merrell Trail Glove and Vibram 5 Finger KSO. I have to say The One by Altra has been my favorite so far. There isn't much cushioning but this allows the shoe to be lighter and more flexible. The wide toe-box is great, it's as if you're running barefoot because it allows enough room for a natural toe-off.
To me the shoes run small. In running shoes I usually wear a 11.5 but I had to go up a full size to 12.5 for a comfortable fit.
The customer service with Optimal Run/Natural Running Store was awesome. They really care about each customer and will do all they can to ensure you have a positive experience.

I loved my Instincts, since they are the most comfortable shoes I've ever run in, but since moving fully to minimal shoes, they seemed very heavy and unweildy by comparission. So when I finally wore through Instincts, I was looking for something lighter and stripped down. Apparently I wasn't alone, as right when I was looking Altra released this shoe! Its pretty much exactly what one would expect from a "minimal" Altra shoe -- wide toe-box, enough cushioning to keep it out of the true minimal camp but nothing extranious. I basically use The One to give my feet a break from my daily shoe, Merrell's Road Glove. The One delivers exactly what I want -- a little something more between myself and the road. Its light, comfortable, and well made.
My ONLY caviat is that despite the description to the contrary, I find it runs smaller than the Instinct. I wore an 11 for the Instinct, but the same size One rubed against my toes uncomfortably. I'm moving up a size.

I had some initial reservations when I heard that this shoe is intended for speed work and distance running, but I thought I'd give it a shot. I have had them for a couple weeks, and I think they are aptly named. While they are zero drop, they aren't minimal - the cushioning is definitely substantial enough for mid-range training (6-9), but they are also fast and flexible enough for speed work. I probably wouldn't train for a marathon using only these shoes, and I could find a faster shoe to set a 5K PR, but if you are like me and can't afford a stable of shoes, The One is the best multi-use shoe I have tried (as compared to the Kinvara, Cortanna, Gravity, and Minimus). I love this shoe. As a side note, the customer service I received from optimalrun.com was wonderful. Fast and super helpful when I was trying to make my decision.
